Dan Bass, a certified flight instructor, is in the lucky to be alive column. Dan reports: “In February 2017, I needed to visit a customer in Thunder Bay, Ontario. By car, it’s over a 7-hour drive from Winona, Minnesota, where I live. But my Mooney would allow me to easily make the trip there and back in one day. With the exception of being cold, the weather looked great for a trip up north.” Dan ended up his flight in a farmer’s field, unconscious after succumbing to Carbon Monoxide poisoning while in flight.
Hear first-hand from Dan, his exceptional experience “cheating death”, some Carbon Monoxide and aircraft lessons learned. Dan will discuss simple precautions which can save your life.
Dan lives in Winona, Minnesota. He owns and operates Mec-Pro Mfg, a custom equipment manufacturing company founded by his father in 1975, who was also a pilot and aircraft owner. Dan soloed on his 16th birthday and received his Private Pilot Certificate on his 17th birthday. He is a Certified Flight Instructor with over 2500 hours. After his accident, Dan replaced his Mooney M20C Ranger with a Mooney M20K 231. While upgrading his new Mooney, Dan is flying a Piper twin Comanche.
