April Meeting: "Hoover" of Pilot Debrief

  • 09 Apr 2025
  • 19:00
  • 75 Tiverton Court

A light dinner will be served at 6:30pm.  Our speaker will begin at 7pm.

Aviate Navigate Communicate, a concept instilled into all student pilots during flight training. In aviation, the smallest oversight can lead to a deadly mistake when all the holes in the Swiss Cheese line up.

Pilot safety is a concern for most pilots. At many BFC club meetings and our cockpit coffee conversations, we have discussed many topics like Flight into Known Icing, the 180 Degree turnback after engine failure, hypoxia, to name a few. At a few of our meetings, our historical unofficial self-appointed safety officer, David R. Cox, hosted many “I Learned From This” inviting club members to discuss real life incidents which could have been life altering for both the pilot, friends and family. In 2023, the club formalized the Safety Officer role, making the position part of the club’s executive.

Expanding our reach and awareness, Hoover, from Pilot Debrief fame will be attending our meeting to discuss how to avoid the Swiss Cheese syndrome, saving lives. Hoover will be joining us over Zoom.

About Hoover

Hoover is a former Lieutenant Colonel and F-15E fighter pilot with over 20 years of service including missions in Iraq and Syria. He oversaw a special assignment with the Marines, flying F/A-18Ds, focusing on safety for over 100 aircraft and 6,000 personal at the Seymour Johnson Air Force base.

After retiring from the military, Hoover went onto to fly commercially for both the airlines and charter industry. The military take safety first approach for each mission, beginning with a mission briefing, flying the mission followed by a de-brief. Essentially, what could they have done better to ensure the safety of the aircraft and personnel.

In 2022, Hoover founded Pilot Debrief on YouTube, reviewing aviation accidents and incidents.

Focusing on the facts and aligning the Swiss cheese model, each mishap is reviewed in detail with the goal that the analysis will help others not make the same mistakes leading to deadly consequences. Pilot Debrief has more than 780,000 subscribers, who routinely expand their knowledge and safety through better pilot decisions. His debut episode entitled “What No One is Saying About the Dallas Air Show crash” went into the details where six people lost their lives after the mid-air collision of a P-63 fighter and B17 bomber.

Location:

This is a hybrid meeting, on Zoom and in person.  If you cannot attend in person, check your BFC-News email for the Zoom link!

The in-person session will be held at the SMS Training Facility at 75 Tiverton Court.  This is just off Allstate Parkway just short of the old Nav Can tower on the southwest side of the field.  Google Maps link.

Come North up from Hwy 7 on Allstate Parkway just past the sign that says No Exit after the 2nd or 3rd stop sign, and Tiverton is on the left.  Follow it west to the end (only 100 meters or so) and go to the Toshiba Building, #75.  Go left into the parking area (you may recognize a number of Ambulances parked there).  The door for the Training Center is at the basement area on the South side of the building.  The door is normally closed but we will have someone letting people in.  Call Dave Sprague if you need assistance -- his cell phone number is posted in the BFC-News announcement of this meeting.  Or, ask in the WhatsApp group.
