BFC Haiti Effort

Over the last several weeks a few Buttonville Flying Club members have tried to figure out how our club could help out with the relief effort in Haiti. The idea is to join dozens of other GA aircraft from the US that are now bypassing the bottle neck at Port-au-Prince airport by flying relief supplies daily into Haiti's smaller General Aviation airports.

Here is what we have come up with:

This year a number of BFC planes and pilots are planning the usual flight down to Sun and Fun in April and a few are going further south to the Bahamas looking for even more sun. From here our aircraft are within easy reach of Haiti and a side trip to the disaster zone becomes an economical way of delivering much needed supplies.   With the crisis in Haiti we have an opportunity to utilize our annual migration for the good of humanity.  That's the Toronto branch of Habitat for Humanity which has been working with Habitat Haiti for over 26 years.

The earth quake that hit Haiti in January has created a huge housing crisis and tools and supplies are urgently needed to help Haitians rebuild in the short and long-term.

The Buttonville Flying Club is forming a team to raise money for supplies for Haiti and, if practical,  to utilize our aircraft to cut through the bottle necks to deliver at least part of these supplies directly to the Habitat Haiti organization. The details are still being worked out but the plan is to raise money with charitable donations to the Toronto Habitat organization. They will then help us turn these donations directly into the required relief supplies and provide contacts to meet our aircraft at one of the less used GA airports in Haiti to pick up the supplies.

We have setup a BFC team page for those who would like to either join or sponsour our efforts:

Each BFC pilot planning to fly down can join the team and create their own personal page. I created a personal page for myself and plan to make the Haiti day trip at the end of the Sun and Fun airshow in Florida.  Remember all money raised before Feb 12th will be match by the Canadian Government and your donation is tax deductible.

A lot of details still need to be worked out but a representative from Habitat will be at this Wednesdays meeting to help launch this effort.

Please forward this email to who every would be interested in sponsoring us and stay tuned for more details.
